Rating Systems have Reinvigorated Spec Writing and Enforcement

Selecting products and writing specifications that support a project's sustainability goals can be a daunting task with the variety of third-party rating systems and in the current landscape of material transparency.

However, there is a huge opportunity to enhance the professional growth of staff when specs are used as a tool for teaching - about sustainability, about coordinating key product criteria and as an enforcement guide during construction administration to track supplied materials.

Participants will learn how using specifications as a tool pays off project after project for LEED v4.1 rating system product selection, fosters steps toward sustainable market transformation, and guides a new generation of staff to garner a respect for written specs.

At the end of this session, participants shall be able to.

  1. Define the typical construction material selection process.
  2. Describe how sustainability criteria can guide product selections and performance criteria.
  3. Integrate specs into the design team workflow and construction administration activities.
  4. Compile tallies of materials credits from the LEED v4.1 rating system to re-inform future specs.
